The one hundred and thirty-five Type 5 Heavy Freight Co-Co Diesel-Electric Locomotives were built between 1976-84
- Class 56/0 - The initial thirty locomotives were built in Romanian and required rebuilding to correct poor construction methods
- Class 56/0 - The remaining one hundred and fifteen locomotives were completed by BR Doncaster and Crewe
