The initial thirty Class 56 Type 5 Co-Co Diesel Freight Locomotives were built from 1976 in Romanian and required rebuilding to correct poor construction methods. The remaining one hundred and fifteen locomotives were completed by BR Doncaster and Crewe, the final locomotive being constructed in 1984.
