Two hundred and sixty-three Type 3 A1A-A1A Diesel Electric Class 31 were built between 1957-62.
- Class 31/1 - The 31/1 variants made up the majority of the class
- Class 31/4 - A batch of 31/1s were converted to Electric Train Heating to run passenger services requiring ETH
- Class 31/6 - A small group were converted with through ETH wiring for Fragonset
Class 31/1 > Ex-Farish Model

The early Bachmann version were based on the older Farish bodies and chassis.
